The Variations of Porcelain Veneers

The most popular of the veneer types, porcelain is an exceptionally durable and long-lasting solution. Ceramic layers are usually composed of dentin and enamel to simulate a natural look and excellent fit. There will be some reduction in your natural teeth size with this method which might make it not be the best option for you.

Here are three examples as you consider porcelain veneers for your cosmetic improvements:

  • Prep-less- This variation requires no reduction to your natural teeth before the placement. Prep less veneer shells are ultra- thin porcelain pieces that lay over your existing teeth just like traditional porcelain veneers. If you are looking to correct several dental issues these may not be your best option.
  • Minimal Prep- As the name suggests, minimal prep veneers can be placed with little preparation to your teeth before bonding. An exceedingly small amount of the teeth needs to be removed before the porcelain veneers are placed, which allows you the option of keeping your natural tooth structure in comparison to traditional porcelain veneers.
  • Composite- If you are looking for a more affordable veneer restoration, composite veneers can be a good alternative. There is truly little to almost no preparation needed to the teeth before placing this restoration. Composite veneers are also effective in correcting dental concerns. However, they do not have the life expectancy of porcelain, usually requiring replacement in five to ten years.

The Preparation for Your Porcelain Veneers

In this preparation visit, Northside Dental will start by making some room for the veneers to be placed over your existing teeth. In doing this, we will remove a thin layer of the tooth enamel. This procedure is usually painless, but we may give you the option for anesthesia if you wish.

Next, we will take an impression of your teeth to use in helping to fabricate the desired shape you are looking for with the porcelain veneers. We will also suggest the most appropriate shade of porcelain to match the current color of your natural teeth or your selected color if you are looking to improve discoloration and staining. Your veneers will next be fabricated at the dental lab before they are ready for bonding.

Placing the Porcelain Veneers

The final appointment is fun. Your veneers will be ready for placement, and you will get to leave with a revived, stunning smile. First, we will double-check and make sure the veneers match the color and shape desired. We may need to trim or change the color slightly before the bonding begins if they appear to need slight modification.

Once your veneers pass the eye test, we will need to prepare your teeth by conducting a general cleaning, polishing, and then etching of the teeth. Etching means to roughen up the front surface by using an abrasive dental liquid for the veneers to successfully adhere to the teeth.

Once this prep work is finished, a bonding cement will be placed before placing the veneers over the teeth. If the cement needs assistance in drying, a blue light will be used to quicken the curing process. With that you can jump up and look in the mirror. Make sure to speak with Northside Dental about any follow-up appointments that might be needed to ensure your veneers are comfortable after placement.

Possible Side Effects and Proper Aftercare

Some patients experience tooth sensitivity after their porcelain veneers are placed when consuming hot or cold foods or drinks. This side effect will subside in a few weeks, but make sure to check in with us if the sensations last longer or continue.

After finally achieving the new smile you have been waiting for, you will want to make sure you are taking the time to maintain your porcelain veneers to ensure their long-lasting result. If you grind your teeth you should always wear a mouthguard while sleeping. Veneers, just like teeth, do not do well when clenched and twisted, and can result in cracking or fracturing. You will also be encouraged to avoid hard foods such as dense nuts or ice that can cause stress on the veneers causing failure.
