Conscious Sedation Dentistry

Anxiety and fear of dental treatment are quite common. Typically, patients’ fears stem from a previous bad experience, a tendency toward anxiety, or the expectation of pain.

Northside Dental offers conscious sedation to our patients to help them overcome any uneasiness with dental procedures – from simple teeth cleaning to more complex procedures. We never want our patients to skip critical dental services because of fear.

What is conscious sedation?

Conscious sedation is the administration of sedatives before a dental procedure to help you relax.

We use nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” for sedation. Nitrous oxide produces a relaxing effect and minimizes pain with its analgesic properties. It can even reduce gag reflexes that some people have with dentistry. With nitrous oxide, you are awake, but you may not remember much about the procedure or feel pain.

At the end of the procedure, the nitrous oxide gas is safely flushed from your body with pure oxygen, resulting in no long-lasting effects. You can safely drive yourself home after a short recovery period.

Other Anesthetics

Conscious sedation is not always needed. For many procedures, we will simply numb the local area with an anesthetic (novocaine/lidocaine being the most well known). If this still does not ease your anxiety, conscious sedation is always an option.

Our team will be happy to discuss sedation needs with you – call us. Please don’t miss dental appointments because of fear!
