Conscious Sedation

Conscious Sedation

Anxiety and fear of dental treatment are quite common for people. Typically, patients’ fears are the result of a previous bad experience, general tendencies towards anxiety, or the expectation of pain when receiving dental treatment. Our compassionate team at Northside Dental wants to do all we can to help ease our patients’ worry and make their visit as comfortable as possible. We offer conscious sedation to our patients to provide a way to overcome their uneasiness and obtain the dental care they need.

What is conscious sedation?

Conscious sedation is the administration of sedatives before a dental procedure begins for the purpose of helping the patient to relax. You remain awake and aware during dental treatment. The sedative will just make you feel very relaxed.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous Oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is a safe form of conscious sedation offered to our Northside Dental patients. Nitrous oxide is a great form of conscious sedation for patients who are nervous about receiving dental care. Nitrous oxide gas produces a relaxing effect and minimizes pain with its analgesic properties. It can even reduce gag-reflexes.

Will I be able to drive home after receiving Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas?

Yes. At the end of the procedure, the nitrous oxide gas is safely flushed from the body with pure oxygen, resulting in no long-lasting effects. Patients are safely able to drive themselves home after a short recovery period.
Dr. Price, Dr. Neff, and our team will be happy to answer any additional questions you may have about conscious sedation.
